How Often Should You Deep Clean Each Room in Your Home?

One of the most common questions we hear from homeowners in Red Bank and Monmouth County is: “How often do I actually need to deep clean?” The answer depends on the room, how it’s used, and who’s using it. Here’s your room-by-room guide.

Kitchen: Every 1–3 Months

The kitchen takes the most abuse of any room. Inside-appliance cleaning (oven, refrigerator, microwave), degreasing the hood vent, scrubbing behind the stove, and cleaning inside cabinets should happen quarterly at minimum — monthly if you cook frequently.

Bathrooms: Every 1–2 Months

Standard bathroom cleaning (toilet, sink, mirror) should be weekly. But deep cleaning — scrubbing grout, cleaning caulking, getting behind fixtures, and sanitizing exhaust fans — should happen every 4–8 weeks.

Bedrooms: Every 3–6 Months

Deep bedroom cleaning includes washing pillows and duvet inserts, flipping the mattress, vacuuming under the bed, cleaning inside closets, and wiping down all baseboards and trim. Twice a year is sufficient for most bedrooms.

Living Room: Every 3–6 Months

Upholstery cleaning, under-sofa vacuuming, dusting ceiling corners and vents, cleaning behind entertainment centers, and washing throw pillows and cushion covers should happen seasonally.

Laundry Room: Every 3 Months

Clean the inside of your washing machine drum, the lint trap housing, and behind and under the washer and dryer. These are often completely ignored and harbor mold and lint buildup.

Garage and Basement: Annually

These spaces need a full sweep-out, dewebbing, and surface wipe-down at least once a year — more if they’re high-traffic areas.
